A Seminar on Voyager II at the Department of Systems & Naval Mechatronic Engineering, NCKU

On May 11th 2020, ROV MAKER gave a seminar at the Department of Systems & Naval Mechatronic Engineering, National Cheng Kung University. The seminar was about ROV design and participants were the graduate students. The first two hours of the three-hour sessions were spent on PowerPoint lecture and the last hour was hands-on operation of the vehicle at the wave pool affiliated to the department. Along with Voyager II was the ROV made by the department, which offered the students a chance to check out how the two types of ROVs perform underwater.

The Department of Systems & Naval Mechatronic Engineering at National Cheng Kung University is a top institution for ship building talents. Accordingly, this seminar was more profound than those we had before. We started with software / hardware / mechanic / thruster, the four fields that went into the design considerations of Voyager II. Then we moved on to the trade-off between the theoretical framework and practical application.

We introduced international ROV DIY businesses such as OpenROV (Sofar) and Blue Robotics. Many of their products are open source and have inspired those who are interested in ROV DIY.

For the last part of the seminar, we went to the wave pool in the basement for  hands-on operation of the vehicle. As the name suggests, the pool simulates waves to observe whether the ship design can work practically in water.

Overall, students were impressed by Voyager II’s lightweight design, maneuverability and real-time image transmission. When the students learned that the vehicle is integrated with OpenCV and the user can write their own program using JavaScript, they asked questions about automatic control.
